POLICE MOUNTAIN BIKE UNIT The Police Mountain Bike Unit consists of six officers and a supervisor. The officers received 32 hours of specialized training in the use of firearms while on a bike, evasive maneuvers and strength and conditioning. Each officer in the unit is an avid cyclist outside of the police department and in excellent physical condition. The officers patrol the city on specially equipped mountain bikes and ride in teams of two. In addition to handling various runs from dispatch and backing up other officers on the road, their primary target for patrol are areas not easily accessible with a car such as alley ways, schoolyards and shopping centers. The Mountain Bike Unit also participates in special events and parades as well as educating school children on the safe operation of a bicycle. CRIME PREVENTION UNIT The Crime Prevention Unit (C.P.U.) is currently staffed with one officer. The primary responsibility of this unit is to initiate various on-going crime prevention programs. These programs are then presented to the citizens of the community in order to educate and inform them of the latest and most effective techniques to stop crime. This is done through the administration of the Neighborhood Watch Program which organizes citizens according to the particular block they live on. Volunteers are recruited to be block leaders in their neighborhood, and they work closely with the C.P.U. Officer to identify and prevent particular types of crime in their neighborhood. The block leaders also distribute a monthly crime report published by the C.P.U. Officer to keep members apprised of criminal activity within the city. The C.P.U. Officer and block leaders conduct annual meetings with their block to answer specific questions and concerns they may have about the program or other activity on their block. In addition to conducting seminars and school programs, the C.P.U. assists uniform officers by keeping them apprised of crime trends within the city through on going crime analysis. Additionally, the C.P.U. tracks precious metal and pawn shop activity while maintaining a computer database of these transactions.
TRAFFIC SAFETY UNIT The Traffic Safety Officer (T.S.O.) is a one-man unit whose main responsibility is to investigate and follow-up on hit and run accidents. Additionally, the T.S.O. coordinates and trains the school crossing guards, compiles statistical information from accident reports and investigates all fatal accidents. The T.S.O. conducts traffic studies at the request of the traffic safety board and city planning commission when changes are considered to existing streets and building projects. The Traffic Safety unit is also trained in motor carrier enforcement.

The CRT has two specialized vehicles for use in tactical situations. The Peacekeeper is an armored rescue vehicle that was donated to the CRT by the United States Air Force. The CRT also has a converted ambulance that was donated by American Medical Response (AMR). These vehicles are used to transport team members to various incidents. These vehicles were obtained and re-furbished and are maintained at no cost to the taxpayers of Eastpointe.
