JOB APPLICATIONS Applications for all positions are accepted in the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 23200 Gratiot, Room 6. The Clerk's Office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Applications and resumes are kept on file for one (1) year. Whenever the City actively seeks applications for a particular position, applicants who have applied for those positions within the last 12 months are notified to submit an updated application. RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS Current labor contracts state that all members of the bargaining unit shall reside within the State of Michigan and the Counties of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb or St. Clair south of Interstate 69 (I-69). This residency requirement must be met within 6 months of completion of the probationary period. Probation could be 6 or 12 months, depending on the position. REQUIREMENTS TO BE A POLICE OFFICER The last time the City recruited for Police
Officer, the minimum qualifications were as follows. (These are subject to change
for future recruiting efforts.) Have and maintain U. S. Citizenship. Have and maintain valid Michigan driver's or chauffeur's license. License cannot have any restrictions applying to time, area, special mechanical control devices or conditions (except corrective lenses). Have and maintain acceptable driving record. High school diploma (applicant must provide photocopy of diploma or G.E.D. at time of application). Associates Degree in Criminal Justice will qualify applicant for 2 additional education points added to final passing score (provide proof with application). Must not have been convicted of a violation of criminal law. (Criminal law generally includes all offenses except traffic law, conservation law and liquor law.) In general, conviction for a violation of criminal law is automatic disqualification. Must possess normal hearing, normal color vision and normal visual functions and acuity in each eye correctable to 20/20. No physical or mental disability which would preclude performing the duties of a police officer. Prior to employment, applicant must pass city-designated physical examination, which includes drug screening and testing, a psychological examination and a character/criminal history/driving record background check.
- U. S. Citizenship - At least 18 years of age on or before the closing date for applications and must be able to provide proof with application; - High School Education (copy of diploma or G. E. D. certificate must accompany application); - Michigan State Certified Firefighter I and II; - Must possess a current Michigan or National Paramedic License; - Must have and maintain valid operator's license without record of suspension or revocation in any State; - No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories; must not have been convicted of a violation of criminal law; - Must possess normal hearing, normal color vision and normal visual functions and acuity in each eye correctable to 20/20; - No physical or mental disability which would reduce or prevent effective performance of assigned duties; - Residency within the State of Michigan and the Counties of Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair south of Interstate 69 (I-96) within six (6) months of successful completion of probation; - An extensive background check will be conducted on each application; false, misleading or inaccurate information or statements will cause the applicant to be disqualified immediately. - This position involves fire prevention, suppression, emergency aid, and basic and advanced life support.
